The advent of printmaking (D체rer’s favoured medium) meant that, to a large extent, he was free to pursue his own artistic direction, rather than follow the demands of princes, bishops and other patrons commissioning paintings. He sought to create an art that was “rooted in nature”, and the closest thing to nature at hand was his own body. |
