I think they are frustrated with trying to convince policy makers of the virtues of policies which support innovation, such as tax credits for R&D. This must be especially the case in America, where half the republicans think any involvement by govt is bad and use econ101 type arguments to defend their case. I think the real beef is not with economists dumbing things down to econ101 type explanations, but non-economist politicians bending the science of econ101 to support whatever their agenda is.
