Isaac Cruikshank, the caricaturist, accepted a challenge to a drinking match and succumbed to an irreversible coma, dying at the age of 48. A list of the alcoholic drinks consumed in one typical day by the talented painter George Morland takes up most of a page. By the time of his death, aged 41, he had given his brother the wording of his own epitaph: “Here lies a drunken dog”. |
